The fourth year students of the Degree in Mechanical Engineering taught by the Defense University Center at the Spanish Naval academy (CUD-ENM) made last Tuesday, July 8th, an institutional visit to Navantia’s facilities, accompanied by Professor Pedro Carrasco Pena, in order to learn first hand about the development of the F-110 Program and other strategic lines of work being developed at the Fene-Ferrol shipyard.

The visit began at the shipyard facilities in Ferrol, starting in the main administrative building, where the attendees received a presentation on Navantia’s organizational structure and historical evolution—from its origins to its current focus on naval innovation. They then moved to the former maintenance building to view a multimedia presentation showcasing the progress of ongoing projects, including the Auxiliary and Combat Support Ship (BAC) and Flights 2 and 3 of the F-110 frigates, which feature enhanced capabilities.
At the turbine workshop, experts explained the machining processes and the stringent dimensional quality control systems in place. The group then visited the armament workshop and Construction Slipway No. 2, where they were able to observe the blocks of the second frigate and, on the slipway, the F‑111 frigate, which is nearing the completion of its outfitting phase. The launch of this frigate is scheduled for September 2025.

The visit continued with a tour of the modern digital sheet metal cutting workshop, which is in its final stages of construction. This 40,000-square-meter facility is equipped with state-of-the-art CNC technology and will soon begin operations to manufacture components for the third frigate of the F-110 program in a fully autonomous manner.
The visit concluded with a reception and closing social event, providing the students with the opportunity to exchange impressions with the various officials who took part in the visit.
