Visit of CUD-ENM staff to the LHD “Juan Carlos I”
Numerous lecturers from the Defense University Center at the Spanish Naval Academy (CUD-ENM), had the opportunity to visit the amphibious aircraft carrier “Juan Carlos I” during its stay in the port of Marín on April 28th and 29th, 2022. Two visits were organized: on Thursday afternoon for 8 lecturers (María Álvarez, Javier Pérez, Leticia Pérez, José Antonio González, Jorge Feijoo, Jesús del Val, Carlos Pérez and Débora Cores) and on Friday morning for 5 lecturers (Miguel Ángel Álvarez, Rocío Maceiras, Milagros Fernández, Lorena González and Rubén Nocelo). During these visits, which lasted just over an hour, they had access to the bridge and aircraft control area, the flight deck where a single aircraft (a helicopter) was “resting”, the turbine chamber and auxiliary equipment, the light vehicle and aircraft transport area and, finally, the heavy vehicle transport and debarkation area. This large vessel has capacity for 1,345 people and has rooms for medical and dental services, operating rooms, X-ray room, ICU and pharmacy. On the deck of the ship there is a large runway for air operations and on the inner part of the ship, at sea level, there is a dock with a large hatch that allows seawater to enter up to a certain level for amphibious operations. The guided tour allowed CUD-ENM lecturers to ask specific questions about the machinery in some of the rooms and its operation, which proved to be very entertaining and illustrative. On Friday morning the Commander of the ship, CN Vicente Rubio Bolívar, also received a representation of the CUD-ENM Management….
Visit to the CUD-ENM research building of the Admiral Chief of Staff of the Navy

Mr. Admiral General Mr. Antonio Martorell Lacave, was able to visit the research facilities of the CUD-ENM. The Director of the CUD-ENM, Dr. Mr. José Martín Davila, accompanied by the center’s management team, first summarized the initiatives implemented at the CUD-ENM to promote the development of the research activity of its teaching and research staff. Precisely, among these initiatives, are the internal calls of the CUD-ENM to finance R&D&i projects aligned with the interests of the Ministry of Defense and the Navy, in particular. There are already two calls to date where research projects have been funded in different fields of knowledge: There are already two calls to date where research projects have been funded in different fields of knowledge: communications (improvement of passive radar performance with application to the maritime field), teleco-computing field (application of artificial intelligence techniques for the improvement of knowledge of the maritime environment), naval/simulation field (development of a methodology for the creation of digital twins on the basis of training boats), chemical field (construction of a pilot plant for the production, purification and storage of hydrogen from glycerin for use in submarines with AIP fuel cell systems) and mechanical/design field (virtual combat laboratory for immersive firearm shooting training). During this visit, the AJEMA was able to learn firsthand, from its principal researchers about the first results of these research projects. In addition, the different Rules of Attack (ROA) involved in the real battlefield are recreated and the aim is to achieve a totally immersive sensation for the user. The first one, framed in the field of mechanical design, proposes the use of Fourth Generation industrial technologies (i4.0) for the hyper-realistic 3D modeling of a combat laboratory (virtual combat laboratory for immersive firearm shooting training (BATTLELAB)), which serves as a virtual training platform for the military practice of firearm shooting. Through the combination of different i4.0 techniques, the characteristic graphical environment and the user/device interaction have been recreated. All this in accordance with the lines of interest established by the Technology and Innovation Strategy (ETID) of the Ministry of Defense, as described in the Technological Goal (MT.6.4.1.) referring to the modeling of the battlefield and its environment. Presentation of the project VIRTUAL COMBAT LABORATORY FOR IMMERSIVE FIREARM SHOOTING TRAINING Secondly, the Professor-Secretary of the CUD-ENM, Dr. Belén Barragáns Martínez (technical coordinator of the project), briefly presented the results of the R+D+i project (recently completed) “Application of artificial intelligence to the knowledge of the maritime environment”, developed by doctors of the CUD-ENM with funding provided by the Navy and support from the Spanish Naval Academy. As a result, a technological demonstrator has been presented to improve the operational procedures developed by the Navy from the Maritime Action Operations and Surveillance Center (COVAM), in charge of monitoring maritime areas of national interest. Specifically, the demonstrator receives the AIS (Automatic Identification System) data stream containing information on ships and their positioning in real time, and uses data analysis and artificial intelligence techniques to detect scenarios and anomalies of interest defined by COVAM. Due to the high rate of messages transmitted, it is necessary to analyze and select Big Data technologies for the storage and processing of information in real time and the research and development of Data Analytics and Machine Learning techniques to process and extract knowledge from the large volume of data involved. Presentation of the project APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TECHNIQUES FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE MARITIME ENVIRONMENT More information on research, development and innovation projects carried out at the CUD-ENM is available at https://cud.uvigo.es/proyectos-contratos….

The stay of a Fulbright professor at CUD-ENM during the first semester of the 2021-2022 academic year has been completed
After a year of suspension of this activity due to the mobility curb caused by the pandemic that began in 2020, in the 2021-2022 academic year it was possible to resume a stay at the Defense University Center located at the Spanish Naval Academy (CUD-ENM) by a Fulbright visiting professor. Thus, from August 24th to December 22nd, 2021, Professor Dr. Jason M. Dahl carried out a teaching and research stay at the CUD-ENM. In 2014, the Center signed an agreement with the Fulbright Commission (whose mission is to favor and promote the exchange of academics between the USA and Spain) in order to have an American professor expert in one of the subjects taught in the final years of the degree in mechanical engineering, so that, in addition, by teaching it in English, it allows students to improve their English language skills. For the first semester of the 2021-2022 academic year, the Fulbright Commission selected Professor Jason Dahl for his academic merits. This American professor completed his doctoral thesis at the prestigious MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in the field of Ocean Engineering, with previous training in the field of marine engineering and naval architecture. For the last ten years he has been on the faculty and research staff of the Department of Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. He specializes in hydrodynamics and fluid-structure interaction. Academic activity His stay at CUD-ENM lasted throughout the first semester of the academic year 2021-2022, participating, to a large extent, in the teaching of a subject of the degree in mechanical engineering, strongly linked to his specialty and experience. He has taught “Ship Theory and Naval Construction” in English to fifth year students of the Naval Branch. The English language was used for absolutely all class interactions, including seminars, labs, assignments and exams. Research activity During his stay at the CUD-ENM he completed, in mid-October and in virtual format due to restrictions on face-to-face meetings caused by the pandemic, a presentation of his research activity to the faculty of the center, which led to subsequent contacts with researchers who visualized possible lines of collaboration by sharing concerns and research topics. Visit to Ferrol: Navantia, Arsenal of the Navy and Polytechnic School of Ferrol In December, he made a visit to Ferrol (accompanied by the CUD-ENM professor, TN Pedro Carrasco, doctor of the Corps of Engineers of the Spanish Navy). One of the stops was made in Navantia, with a general visit to the facilities of the Ferrol Shipyard, which allowed a tour of the construction process from the sheet metal yard and raw material warehouses to the armament docks. Before the tour, the model room was visited to explain the centenary history of shipbuilding in the facilities.
