Professional visit of second-year students to the facilities of the Spanish Company of Marine Algae (CEAMSA)

On Monday, July 4th, 2022, 16 second-year students (ASP 2º) of the degree in Mechanical Engineering visited the facilities of the Spanish Company of Marine Algae (CEAMSA) accompanied by the CUD-ENM lecturer Ms. Lorena González Gil. This visit is part of the chemical and environmental training of future Navy officers.

CEAMSA was founded more than 55 years ago in O Porriño (Pontevedra), where its headquarters are located. Accompanied by the Human Resources Director Mr. Jorge Trigo Somoza, the Production Manager Mr. Carlos Méndez González and the Mechanical Maintenance Manager Mr. José Alejandro Acuña Vila, the students were able to learn about the vision and mission of this company, a world leader in the production of natural hydrocolloids, specifically carrageenan, pectin, fiber, alginate and locust bean gum.

The students first visited the different production lines of the plant, with emphasis on the operation of specific equipment (dryers, filters, heat exchangers, etc.), manufacturing processes and techniques to reduce their environmental impact, as well as the logistical aspects required to ensure market demand worldwide. They then visited a pilot-scale testing plant and the company’s R+D+i and quality laboratories.

Finally, a tasting was carried out with commercial products to which compounds such as carrageenan or pectin are added to achieve their final texture, which allowed us to verify the wide variety of applications that these additives have.

At the end of the visit, a commemorative plaque was delivered to the representatives of the company.
